Trust and transparency

Why ethics matter in spiritual care

At the chapel along the way., we believe that genuine spiritual support requires a foundation of trust. Mark O'Reilly's personal code of ethics ensures that every conversation, every prayer, and every moment of guidance you share is held with respect, confidentiality, and compassion. You deserve care that's transparent about its boundaries and committed to your wellbeing.

How we uphold our standards

Ethics in action at the chapel

Mark's personal code of ethics isn't just written down—it guides every conversation and interaction at the chapel along the way. We practice accountability through regular reflection, honest self-evaluation, and a commitment to continuous improvement in how we serve you. Mark’s Personal Code of Ethics for Spiritual Caregiving Spiritual care is sacred work. It deserves humility, honesty, and a heart that listens before it speaks. This code reflects the posture I bring into every conversation, prayer, and moment of companionship. 1. Christ at the Center Everything I offer flows from the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. I don’t point people to myself — I point them to Him. My role is to walk beside, not ahead or above. 2. Grace Over Judgment Every person carries a story. Every story deserves gentleness. I refuse to shame, pressure, or correct someone into spiritual growth. Grace is the soil where real transformation takes root. 3. Presence, Not Performance I don’t show up to impress, fix, or control. I show up to be present — to listen, to pray, to hold space for whatever someone is carrying. Authenticity matters more than polish. 4. Respect for Personal Boundaries Your faith journey is yours. I will never push past what you’re ready to share or assume authority over your decisions. I honor your pace, your questions, and your freedom. 5. Confidentiality and Trust What is shared with me stays with me. I treat every conversation as a sacred trust, protecting privacy unless someone is in danger or asks me to share something on their behalf. 6. No Hidden Agendas I don’t recruit, pressure, or persuade. I don’t represent an institution or try to pull anyone away from their church community. My only aim is to support, encourage, and strengthen your walk with Christ. 7. Honesty and Integrity I speak truthfully, admit when I don’t know something, and refuse to pretend expertise I don’t have. Integrity is part of spiritual care — without it, nothing else holds. 8. Humility in All Things I am not the hero of anyone’s story. I am not the solution to anyone’s pain. I am simply a companion on the road, trusting the Holy Spirit to do the real work. 9. Scripture as a Guiding Light I lean on the Bible as my foundation — not as a weapon, but as a source of wisdom, comfort, and truth. I use Scripture to illuminate, not to intimidate. 10. Compassion for the Wounded I recognize the deep harm that spiritual abuse, manipulation, and unhealthy leadership can cause. I am committed to being a safe place for those who have been hurt, offering gentleness where others offered pressure. 11. Prayerful Discernment I don’t rush into advice or answers. I listen, I pray, and I seek the Spirit’s leading. Discernment is slow, patient work — and I honor that pace. 12. A Commitment to Joy Spiritual care isn’t only about wounds. It’s also about joy — the joy of Christ, the joy of community, the joy of being fully known and fully loved. I want people to leave lighter than they arrived.
